ABOUT KEVNS

A city is more than its most photographed corner.

A field guide for curious people.

KEVNS is an independent cultural magazine and city-by-city field guide made by Kevin Halstead. Food, architecture, art, music, nightlife, LGBTQ communities, local history, neighborhoods and the things a city is becoming: that is the territory. The categories have boundaries. Curiosity does not.

Why make this thing?

Because a place can be famous and still be badly explained. Because the interesting afternoon often starts one neighborhood beyond the obvious itinerary. Because a restaurant, a record shop, a mural and an old building can tell you more together than they do alone. KEVNS exists to connect those dots—and occasionally follow a dot into a very good bakery.

The neighborhood is the story.

Cities happen at street level. A coffee window has regulars. A theater has an audience that knows the room. A corner has a past, and somebody remembers it. Neighborhoods deserve names, context and their own distinctions. They are places where people live, work and organize, not interchangeable scenery for someone else’s weekend.

Independent does not mean invisible.

Small businesses, working artists, community spaces and independent venues give cities their particular rhythm. KEVNS pays attention to what they make, who they serve and why their presence matters. Big institutions belong here too. A museum and a storefront can both change the way you see a place.

Eight cities. Eight personalities.

Chicago is not Detroit with a different skyline. Miami is not Los Angeles with another beach. Vienna and Vilnius deserve more than a postcard paragraph. Every edition keeps its own visual identity and cultural context. The shared ambition is depth: useful places, specific reasons to go and connections you might otherwise miss.

Bring your curiosity.

Use KEVNS to pick a starting point, find a nearby meal and leave room for the accidental stop. Follow a route. Question a recommendation. Tell me what I missed. Then put the phone away for a bit. The point of the index is to get you into the actual city.

Tell me what I missed.

A correction, a neighborhood story or a place worth a closer look. I’d like to hear it.
