A field guide to eight cities

Los Angeles / City 411

CITY 411.

“Pick one side of town. Add a meal. Let the traffic win somewhere else.”

Historic places

Local history

LA Conservancy connects the city’s architectural landmarks with their histories.

Current details

Important streets to orient by: Sunset Boulevard, Hollywood Boulevard, Wilshire Boulevard and Figueroa Street. LA’s professional sports include the Dodgers, Lakers, Sparks and LAFC. Check each team’s official schedule before planning a game.

“Your friend is five minutes away. Your friend has not left.”

KEVNS’ affectionate city joke, not a quote attributed to residents.

The map is not the journey.

Los Angeles, West Hollywood, Santa Monica, Pasadena and San Marino are not all the same municipality. The guide includes regional destinations because they matter culturally; service jurisdictions, parking rules and transit options still differ. Pick your base around the places you actually plan to use.

Transit / a route with a destination

Metro before optimism

Use Metro’s trip planner and service alerts for the actual day. A rail station near one attraction does not guarantee the next stop is equally convenient. Build a downtown or neighborhood day around reachable clusters, then reserve a separate outing for a distant museum or garden.

Official details

Airport / start and finish

LAX ground transportation

Use the airport’s official ground-transportation information for pickup locations, shuttles and transit connections. Recheck before departure: construction and access arrangements can change. Leave a real travel buffer; “it looked close” is not a flight strategy.

Official details

UCLA / public intellectual life

Westwood campus

Look for lectures, exhibitions and performances through UCLA’s public calendar. The Hammer and Geffen add cultural anchors in the same broader district. Do not manufacture student statistics or assume a university’s research buildings are visitor attractions.

Official details

USC / museums and archives

University Park and Exposition Park

USC public programs and ONE Archives connect scholarship with city culture. Exposition Park adds museums nearby, while Mercado la Paloma offers a practical food stop. Check each institution’s entry requirements rather than treating the area as one open campus.

Official details

Architecture / a city that keeps changing

LACMA’s new collection building

The David Geffen Galleries opened in 2026, so an older description of LACMA as entirely awaiting its new permanent-collection home is outdated. Consult the present campus map and on-view collection. A future-development section needs to move a completed project into the current city.

Official details

Miracle Mile / construction changes a plan

La Brea Tar Pits museum closure

The institution currently reports that its museum is temporarily closed for construction. Research and excavation continue, but that does not mean the former indoor visit is available. Check the site’s current public-access information before putting it into your museum day.

A correction, a neighborhood story or a place worth a closer look. I’d like to hear it.
